Harvest Update
from Winemaker Nick Ferrante

Challenging weather conditions with record low temps and lots of rain has made this a tricky harvest.  Much of the picking was done dodging raindrops!  Despite this, I expect the harvest to be of good quality. Our estate-grown grapes were harvested with good sugars, balanced acidity and great flavors.  The labrusca grape varieties are just the opposite, with low sugars and very high acidity.  Acid reduction procedures are used to lower the acidity and balance the wine.

My brother Anthony and I traveled to Sonoma County, California -- along with Joe Piliterrie of Lakeview Vineyard Equipment -- to purchase a 2002 Pellenc grape harvester.  This model 3300 harvester will allow us to pick cleaner fruit without many leaves and trellise material.  This cleaner picking will also improve wine quality.

Our featured wines this month are Pinot Noir, St. Nicholas Blush (available Nov. 1!), and our Cabernet Franc Ice Wine.
